Grades Eligible: 11, 12
The Health Science Academy offers you a "jumpstart" into your future career in the healthcare industry. If your interests include medicine, dentistry, nursing, diagnostic imaging, emergency services, physical or occupational therapy, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacology, veterinary medicine -- or any other allied health career, the Health Science Academy was designed for you in mind! The related coursework, specialized training, volunteer opportunities, clinical experiences, and membership in HOSA: Future Health Professionals , will equip you with the technical and leadership skills necessary for continued education after high school.
Students will begin the Academy their junior year of high school and attend classes each year until graduation. All core graduation requirements must be met. Some students may be eligible for embedded credit during coursework in the Academy.
Academy students will receive specialized training in HIPAA, bloodborne pathogens, and first aid in addition to Basic Life Support Certification. Students have the option to pursue certifications as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Pharmacy Technician.
HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT
To offer students an integrated academic and health-related curriculum and clinical application that will prepare them for high-skilled jobs in the health professions. Academic excellence, community service, and clinical experience help students develop positive attitudes about education and the future as they plan and prepare for allied health careers.
Program Standards
The Health Science Academy curriculum is based on the National Consortium for Health Science Education standards. Learning activities are also based on the Common Core State Standards for embedded credit in communication arts and science.

TERMINAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the Health Science Academy students shall:
- Earn embedded credit in English Language Arts and Life Science.
- Demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills.
- Contribute to the delivery of health care as a resourceful member of the health care team.
- Actively participate in life-long educational and professional activities which will increase intellectual, technical, and professional growth.
- Develop increased awareness of health career opportunities.
- Demonstrate professionalism in the classroom and clinical setting.
- Practice effective verbal and nonverbal communication with patients/clients/residents, family members, health care team members and potential employers.
- Exhibit attitudes and behavior that are respectful to patient/client/resident, family members, and health care team members.
- Exhibit technical skills and knowledge commensurate with certification as a Nursing Assistant or Pharmacy Technician. (optional)
