First Trimester

Introduction to Surgical Technology-
Introductory concepts that are necessary for a Surgical Technologist to properly perform in the operating room
Sharps protection
Biohazard Training
Suture recongnition and use
Disinfection/Decontamination/Sterilization
Aseptic Techniques
Ethics and moral obligations in surgery

Surgical Techniques Lab-
Hands-on training in scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and preparing a sterile field
Mock surgeries performed on training simulators
Aseptic technique is perfected
CPR/AED certification

Medical Terminology-
Learning medical language with emphasis placed on language and terms which may be used in the surgical setting

Pathophysiology-
The study of infection and disease processes in a body systems approach

Pharmacology-
Study will include drawing up and preparing medications for use during surgery. Many groups of medications will be discussed with emphasis on those used most in the surgical setting

Anatomy and Physiology (4 college credits) Lecture and Lab
This course may be taken prior to entry to the program and transferred into RTC (see transfer policy)
Students may also take this course within the program through Drury University during the fall semester which is included in your tuition and fees here at RTC.


Second Trimester

Surgical Procedures I-
Surgical techniques such as draping, prepping, and set-up of procedures that include the surgical specialties of general, OB/GYN, ENT, orthopedics, and GU surgeries

Integrated Sciences-
This course will cover Microbiology, cells, robotics, computers, etc.

Professional Prep I-
Affective skills such as teamwork and communication
Resume writing
Interview skills

Clinical Externship I-
Real on-the-job training experience guided by a preceptor. Students will scrub most surgical specialties


Third Trimester

Surgical Procedures II-
Continuation of the first course with concentration more on specialty surgical procedures including cardiac, thoracic, opthalmic, oral-maxillofacial, pediatrics, and trauma

Professional Prep II-
Preparation for the national certification exam

Clinical Externship II-
Continuation of on-the-job training skills at a clinical site with concentration in specialty surgical procedures
