The Health Science Academy offers you a "jumpstart" into your future career in the healthcare industry. If your interests include medicine, dentistry, nursing, diagnostic imaging, emergency services, physical or occupational therapy, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacology, veterinary medicine -- or any other allied health career, the Health Science Academy was designed for you in mind! The related coursework, specialized training, volunteer opportunities, clinical experiences, and membership in HOSA: Future Health Professionals, will equip you with the technical and leadership skills necessary for continued education after high school.
Students will begin the Academy their junior year of high school and attend classes each year until graduation. All core graduation requirements must be met. Some students may be eligible for embedded credit during coursework in the Academy.
Academy students will receive specialized training in HIPAA, bloodborne pathogens, and first aid in addition to Basic Life Support Certification. Students have the option to pursue certifications as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Pharmacy Technician.
HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT
To offer students an integrated academic and health-related curriculum and clinical application that will prepare them for high-skilled jobs in the health professions. Academic excellence, community service, and clinical experience help students develop positive attitudes about education and the future as they plan and prepare for allied health careers.
Program Standards
The Health Science Academy curriculum is based on the National Consortium for Health Science Education standards. Learning activities are also based on the Common Core State Standards for embedded credit in communication arts and science.

HEALTH SCIENCE I: This course is an introduction to broad standards that serve as a foundation for all health care occupations. Students will be introduced to the duties, responsibilities, technical skills and knowledge required for a variety of health careers. Medical Terminology is an important component of the course curriculum and can be transcripted as dual credit through East Central College (optional). Through lecture and laboratory time, Health Science I will provide students with the opportunity to learn and demonstrate fundamental entry-level skills to include measuring vital signs, infection control, medical laboratory procedures, patient and employee safety, effective communication, and professionalism.
Additional opportunities in this class include job shadowing, enrollment as a member of Junior Medical Reserve Corps and cooperation with Mid-Missouri AHEC. Participation in HOSA: Future Health Professionals,a national student organization specifically for students interested in health care, is strongly encouraged.
Total cost for these opportunities is approximately $100, depending on student involvement.
This course is a required foundational course for juniors enrolled in the RTC Health Science Academy. NOTE: Students who do not earn a grade of "C" or better will not be allowed to continue in the Health Science Academy their senior year.
NOTE: Students who do not earn a grade of "C" or above during the first semester WILL NOT be allowed to continue to the second semester to complete clinical rotation. Such students must drop Health Science II at the end of first semester

I am currently the Health Science Academy II instructor at RTI/C. I previously spent five years working as a Medical Assistant.
Licensure and Certifications:
HEALTH SCIENCE II: This course is a preparatory course for possible admission to post-secondary allied health programs and is a continuation of Health Science I. Additional entry-level skills involving patient care, nutrition, infection control, and introduction to pharmacology will be obtained through lecture and laboratory practice.
Second semester, students will complete a clinical rotation three days a week with continued classroom instruction twice a week. Personal transportation is required second semester. Student must be able to lift 50 pounds. Upon successful completion of 100 clinical hours in a long-term care facility, the student may choose to take the Certified Nurse Assisting exam for certification
Cost for these opportunities is approximately $200.00 and includes required background check, TB test, flu shot, liability insurance, drug screening, CNA manual, uniforms, stethoscope and gait belt. (Second semester transportation costs are not included in this estimate.)
Additional learning opportunities and volunteer experience with Medical Reserve Corps and Mid-MO AHEC continue through the Health Science Academy student's senior year. Likewise, students can choose opportunities to be a chapter or state officer with HOSA: Future Health Professionals.
